Noah and I engaged in Tikun Olam today with Jewish World Watch. We helped them prepare for the Walk for Darfur, an awareness-raising and fundraising event on June 7th.
We put double-sided masking tape on wooden sticks. On the morning of the Walk, volunteers will attach colorful signs, so walkers can carry the signs.
The work was not glamorous, but that was part of the attraction. Just doing no thinking or planning. A major change from my day to day rabbi life.
Noah and I had a lot of fun figuring out the most efficient way to finish the job. We giggled and laughed, teased each other, and worked hard.
In fact, this project combined two of my goals of my sabbatical: Tikun Olam and spending more time with my kids.
Of course, no good turn goes unpunished. When we realized that while we did prepare over 300 sign sticks, there were another 1000± to do, so we packed 1000 in the car to do over the weekend.
Now off to lunch and a movie - Wolverine - with my kid.
Shalom,
Paul Kipnes
